Community engagement & collaboration

At the Spinifex Foundation SA, our work is deeply rooted in and dynamically driven by the communities we proudly serve. As an Indigenous-led philanthropic foundation, we truly embody the transformative power that arises when philanthropy is designed and led by the very Communities it seeks to uplift.

One of our core principles is ‘For Community, By Community’. This means we are action-oriented, ensuring that all funding priorities, processes, and decisions are inclusively informed by and for the direct benefit of First Nations people in South Australia. We actively collaborate to value diverse perspectives, respect community voices, and foster equality with full transparency in decision-making.

Through significant and adaptive community engagement, often in close collaboration with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs), we dynamically build rapport and gain a deep understanding of the key health and wellbeing needs. This process proactively surfaces priority themes—from generational culture transfer to mental health and disability supports—directly identified by Community. This approach is key to designing a funding model that is culture-based, values-driven, and directly responsive to emergent needs. We ensure continuous, reciprocal dialogue and accountability to Community, ensuring investments are dynamically directed as determined by Community itself.

Our shared vision is a dynamic future where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander South Australians are prosperous in all aspects of life, living healthier, longer, and stronger with equal opportunity, while actively preserving cultural identity and Community individuality for generations to come. Centering Culture first and drawing upon the profound experience and knowledge of Elders are fundamental to adaptively achieving this vital vision.
